Some Helpful FAQs for New Mensa Members

from James Moninger, Membership Officer

How many members are there in Mensa Hawaii?

Mensa Hawaii currently has about 200 members, approximately 40 of which have joined or transferred into the group during the past year.  We have members on five of the Hawaiian Islands, a number of other Pacific island nations, Guam, Japan, and the Philippines.

How often do Mensa members meet?

The new Executive Committee has planned a number of official meetings and receptions this year, including activities on Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai.  In addition, members are encouraged to host their own events, which can be themed around anything that interests the host.  We currently have game nights, lunch groups, weekend coffee-talk, and others.  The possibilities are endless.

What sorts of things interest Mensans?

Mensa members like to talk about practically anything.  Whatever your interests, you will likely others in the group who share your enthusiasm and enjoy spirited conversation.

Will I be intimidated by members who are “more intelligent” than I am?

Perhaps surprisingly, you will not hear your fellow Mensans talking about IQ’s.  Everyone assumes you are smart or you would not be here.  You are a peer by virtue of your membership in the group.  Nobody will ever embarrass you or put you on the spot.  All of us were new members once.  We want you to feel welcome and to realize how important you are to our group!

Does Mensa hold any official opinions?

Mensa is an international society that exists to serve as a communications platform for its members.  The sole criterion for membership, which you have met, is a score at or above the 98th percentile on any of a number of standardized intelligence tests.  Mensa holds no official opinions of any kind.
